The Hawthorne Caballeros Introduce Their 2018 Brass Staff!
The Hawthorne Caballeros are proud to introduce the 2018 Hawthorne Caballeros Brass staff.
John Adcock – Brass Caption Head
John Adcock is entering his second year as brass caption head with the Caballeros, and fourth as a member of the brass staff. John has performed as a tuba and bass trombone player with various groups at Walt Disney World in Orlando and Busch Gardens of Tampa. John spent seven years in the US Army Band as a performer on tuba and trombone, music arranger, and sound engineer, including deploying to Iraq and Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to his military service, John was a freelance tuba and bass trombone player and private instructor in the Orlando and Tampa Bay-areas of Florida for many years.
John got his drum corps start with Suncoast Sound and later moved to the Blue Devils. He went on to perform with the Reading Buccaneers as a euphonium player in 2004- 2005 and with Carolina Gold in 2006, where he served as a member of the brass staff and as head drum major. In addition to the Caballeros, John has been on many drum corps and marching band staffs, including Teal Sound, the Glassmen, Magic of Orlando, Spring-Ford Area High School, Daniel Boone High School, and the 2008 US Bands Group V Open National Champions, Upper Darby High School. He currently serves as a music arranger and the ensemble director at Avon Grove High School in West Grove, PA. John is the owner of JA Music (JAM), a marching band arranging and consulting company. He lives in Thorndale, PA with his wife, a multi-championship winning color guard designer.
Joshua Jenkins – Assistant Brass Caption Head
Joshua “JJ” Jenkins has his Music Education Degree from Ithaca College. During his time at Ithaca, he studied French Horn with Professor Alexander Shuhan. Currently, Joshua is a band director in the Vernon Township School District in Vernon, NJ, where he conducts the 6th and 7th grade band, as well as teaches brass and percussion lessons in grades 4-12. JJ is the assistant marching band director for the Vernon Township Viking marching band and conducts jazz band in the district. His other teaching experience includes being the band director at Brooklawn Middle School in Parsippany, NJ. He has instructed the Parsippany Hills marching band, has taught/consulted for the Hackettstown High School Marching band, the Vestal High School Marching Band, and the 2013 US Bands National Champion, North Warren Regional High School marching band.
No stranger to drum corps, JJ has been a member of the Hawthorne Caballeros from 2008-2017. During his time at the Caballeros, he marched mellophone, held the position of head drum major, and was a member of the brass staff in 2015. His other drum corps experience includes being a marching member of the Carolina Crown in 2013 and 2014. During his time with Crown, he was a soloist, the recipient of the 27th Lancers Foundation Scholarship, and was a member of 2013 DCI World Champion corps. Instructed by some of the best in the business, JJ is excited to bring all of his knowledge and skills he has learned to the 2018 Caballeros Brassline!
Kyle Risch – Brass Technician
Kyle Risch holds a BA in Music Education from West Chester University where he performed with several of the school’s premier ensembles including the Wind Ensemble for three years. After graduating, Kyle went on to begin his education career as a high school band directory in the Parsippany Troy Hills School District where he was music arranger for the marching band. In 2010, Kyle began his drum corps experience by marching with the Caballeros. He then went on to teach Jersey Surf (2013-2014), Caballeros (2015-2016), and Cadets2 (2017) as a brass instructor. Kyle is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in wind band conducting while working at West Chester East High School as their band director.
This season he is returning to the Caballeros and is excited for this experience and opportunity to share his knowledge as well as continue to gain knowledge from his team of colleagues.
Mike D’Avino – Brass Technician
Michael D’Avino has been an active educator, conductor, and musician in the greater-Philadelphia area for the past 12 years. He currently serves as the Director of Bands at Avon Grove High School and as the Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Wind Symphony. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Temple University and a Masters Degree in Conducting from the University of Delaware. In addition to his teaching duties, he is also an active performer on trombone and euphonium.
Jane Peterson – Brass Technician
Jane Peterson is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from West Chester University. She has previously performed with the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps tuba section in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 and was assistant drum major in 2017. Jane also marched with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in 2014. Currently, Jane is working with Spring-Ford Senior High School Marching Band in Royersford, PA and teaches at Show N’ Tell School in Paoli, PA.
Jane is very excited to work with the Caballeros this year and learn the corps’ traditions!
Kirsten Raschdorf – Brass Technician
Kirsten Raschdorf is currently an instrumental music teacher in the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District, where she teaches fourth and fifth grade band in two different elementary schools. Kirsten graduated with a Master of Music in horn performance from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a horn concentration from Carnegie Mellon University. Before beginning her teaching career in New Jersey, Kirsten freelanced in the Los Angeles area, as well as in the Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and New Jersey areas. One of her most memorable and cherished experiences was playing with the horn section of the Thornton Symphony Orchestra in Los Angles with Yo Yo Ma as the featured soloist of the ensemble.
Kirsten began her drum corps career as a mellophone player with The Jersey Surf for four seasons, from 1996-1999, where she learned the fundamentals of brass playing that she still relies on to this day. 15 years later, she came back to drum corps as a mellophone section member with the Hawthorne Caballeros for the 2014, 2016, and 2017 seasons, for which she was the mellophone and french horn soloist in ’16 and ’17. In 2016, she was awarded the Caballeros Brass Player of the Year. Kirsten is currently a music and visual tech for Parsippany High School, as well as Ramsey High School.
Kirsten resides in Wharton, NJ.
Rick Roberts – Brass Technician
Rick Roberts has studied Music Education and Trumpet performance at Montclair State University, County College of Morris, and East Texas State University. Rick is currently an active performing member with some of the finest ensembles in the North Jersey-area, including Imperial Brass, New Jersey Wind Symphony (formerly Ridgewood Concert Band), and North Jersey Concert Band (principal trumpet). Rick also subs with the Ridgewood Symphony orchestra. Rick’s drum corps career spans 4 decades, both as a performer, and instructor.
2018 marks Rick’s 5th year with the Hawthorne Caballeros.
